Frequently Asked Questions

Which Woods Do You Normally Use?

The main woods we use for outdoor projects are cedar, douglas fir and teak.

Cedar is a great wood for outdoor furniture as it’s naturally resistant to rot and insect damage – and isn’t too expensive (except during a pandemic!)

Douglas Fir, while a soft wood, is quite dense and like cedar, quite resistant to rot and insect damage. It’s a great choice for a budget conscious piece or one that is going to be painted anyway.

Teak is a great hardwood for outdoor furniture agin becasue of it’s natural rot and insect resistant properties, It is, however, very expensive and while beautiful, will typically only be used for projects where budget isn’t a major consideration.

How Long Does Outdoor Furniture Typically Last?

Now there’s a great question! Outdoor furniture built from a rot and insect resistant wood such as the three previously mentioned, can actually last for many, many years – IF it is looked after.

For cedar, it doesn’t necessarily need any kind of finish – but it will turn a grey colour if it isn’t treated.

Douglas Fir can again last a lifetime if it too is regularly treated with either a stain or paint.

Finally, teak will also most definitely last a lifetime and, like cedar, will naturally turn grey if left untreated. While some people will like that, some will want to keep that rich golden colour and use something like tung oil.

How Do I Keep Outdoor Furniture In Good Condition?

As mentioned in the previous question, how long a piece of outdoor furniture lasts is very much depenedent on the care that it receives.

So, regularly refinishing a piece (the time depends on the finish used) will make all the difference.

Once you get a piece of outdoor furniture from YYJ Woodworks we will tell you the best way to keep your piece in tip-top condition.
